Digital Photography Basics and the Photo Story: 2 Week

Surfing girl, by Heidi Laughton

In this photography intensive, you'll learn the basic functions of the manual dials of your camera. What are F-Stops, ISO and shutter speeds? How to get good exposures? What are the characteristics that make a good photo? How to change the balance of light using ambient moderators or fill flash. How to produce environmental portraits and how to create and edit a compelling photo story.

Instructor Heidi Laughton will take you through the basic functions for creating great shots. Having worked as a professional photographer, Heidi has photographed pop stars and ambassadors and has shot editorial for NGO's, magazines and advertising companies. Brands include Sony Music, EMI Records; Fortune Time Inc; Official Playstation; Enterprise Holdings; Keen Footwear; Real Travel; American Red Cross; Cannonball advertising; 4040 advertising and many more. Heidi has shot assignments in Sweden, USA, Prague, Germany, Kenya, China and of course the UK, and has taught photography workshops on behalf of The Compelling Image. She has been a judge at PX3, The Paris Photo Prize and at Fresh Photo Fair (Los Angeles).

In the first session, we'll talk through the basics of how to use the manual dials of your camera, with time for questions. A demo and a practical workshop will follow, where you'll be set a small photography challenge. After a break for snacks, we'll critique the work before being given a photo-story assignment to be completed during the week.  In the follow up workshop we'll critique the photo-stories, learn how to edit shots and run through any questions.
